Once back in her room at the inn, Thessa felt a pang of dread in her forehead, as if something hard and small had struck her square in the middle of it. She rubbed the offending spot, and the pain subsided. âWhat the heck was that.â She said.
What did you say? Sarren asked telepathically.
âNothing, I just felt like I got pelted in the forehead with a pebble or small rock for a second.â
Oh, thatâs not good. As far as I know, you have not created any minions, right?
âNever, I would not do to anyone what you did to me. I donât care how much pressure Cassany is applying.â
The pain you describe sounds like what happens when one of the Black Mage minionâs link to you is severed. You are bound to all creatures you create.
âBut, as we have established, that canât be it since I have not created any minions as you put it.â
Then it could be a random body pain. It could mean nothing.
âIâll let you know if I feel it again.â Thessa said. âI am going to change the subject now, and I want you to listen carefully. Do not talk to me in my head when we meet with Gaelyn. I donât want you distracting me.â
I will try. Why donât you speak to me in the same way I speak to you?
âBecause I donât know how, and I would rather just say it.â She stopped and rubbed the spot on her forehead again. âOuch! There it is again.â
Are you certain you have not raised anyone from the dead or created a blood feeder?
âRaise from the dead? That will create a blood feeder?â
Yes. It could if you donât know what you are doing.
âI raised Sir Danton. You were there, remember?â
Yes, but I didnât notice anything unusual. He got up and ran as I remember. Thatâs a common reaction for a human. He was also not dead long enough. The newly dead tend to come back unscathed.
âWell, he was the only one.â
What about the man in the market?
âOh, I had almost forgotten I raised him. He was newly dead too. Could I have made a blood feeder out of him?â
I could never make one until the body had been expired for at least a day. When I tried it on people who had just died, they would rise and live like normal.
âWell, are you a blood feeder? Remember, I raised you too. Shouldnât you be one, I mean?â
Technically, yes! Cassany said she stopped the process so I could instruct you.
âWhen did you talk to Cassany?â
The same time you did, remember?
Thessa took a deep breath. âI have something else to tell you. My mother and Asleth are here.â
In the city?
âIn this inn, staying right across the hall. They also came to the same food booth Gaelyn took me to. It was awkward. Asleth almost figured out who I was.â
How? You look completely different.
âThey kept saying how I looked familiar to them.â
Maybe they are just passing through and will be gone tomorrow.
